In collaboration with philosopher Nicholas Terrie.
Under the guidance of professor Arne de Winde in 2019 we worked under the title of the Willy Sommers song 'Op Reis Naar Jou' translating as 'travelling to you' in ode to his extensive pop song oeuvre and his cult following in Flanders. To honour and reinterpret the song we travelled to the village of Jou in the Spanish Pyrenees, literally living out the words of Sommers, giving it temporarily poetic license over our lives and its direction.
Sophie Whetton chose to document the trip ‘Op Reis Naar Jou’ through a series of analog photographs and narrative text. Her inspiration was the spontaneity of events, the Spainish Pyrenees landscape and her proximity to Nicholas Terrie. The stories told hark back to the surreal and memorable journey that took place out of context of the lives of the artists. The resulting book is just over six meters in length to represent the six days in the village of Jou and the kilometres walked in the region of Alt Pirneu. Each segment is presented in the format of a postcard reiterating the travels classic holiday feeling together with its documentary elements.
